I am a serious audio file and work in the audio industry. I am in search of a great sounding bluetooth receiver. This ain't it. The audio quality on this device is terrible. It certainly is not a flat EQ and there is tons of compression on the audio. I could not be more disappointed.

This review is for the YMOO DS221 HiFi Bluetooth Receiver. This device effortlessly adds high-fidelity Bluetooth audio support to powered speakers, stereo or A/V receivers, or basically anything with a line-in input. The stand-out feature of the YMOO DS221 is its use of relatively high-end hardware and support for updated Bluetooth codecs that work together to deliver higher fidelity Bluetooth audio compared to more conventional implementations. The common denominator for essentially all Bluetooth audio products is the SBC codec, but due partly to its flexibility and open-standard nature, manufacturers don't necessarily implement all of SBC's capabilities, thus sometimes unfairly giving Bluetooth a bad reputation for having poor audio quality.The YMOO DS221 HiFi Bluetooth Receiver addresses this problem by supporting AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and aptX Adaptive codecs that enable higher-bitrate playback with less compression versus SBC, and its "Hi-Res Audio" credentials come from support for LDAC which enables up to 96kHz/24-bit playback. The catch, of course, is that support for these improved codecs requires compatible hardware and software, so you should pay attention to what your Bluetooth audio source's capabilities are if you want to take full advantage of this product. Unfortunately, this isn't always a straight-forward process, but this is more of an ecosystem problem.The aptX family of codecs offer a good combination of sound quality and reliable connection, but since it belongs to Qualcomm, it's mainly supported by Android and Windows 10. Apple devices including phones and computers use AAC if it's available and will otherwise fall back to SBC. LDAC was originally a proprietary Sony codec that's since found its way into Android (version 8+), and it offers the highest quality and bitrates but it's also more prone to connection issues. My Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra defaults to aptX but there's a toggle to enable LDAC in the Bluetooth menu for 96kHz/24-bit operation.Overall, the YMOO DS221 is a awesome product that comes with a very impressive bundle of audio cables including TOS Link, RCA to RCA, and RCA to 3.5mm. It also comes with a USB-A to barrel connector for 5V power input, and a USB-A to USB-C cable for use as a USB DAC. The USB DAC mode isn't particularly impressive since it's limited to 48kHz/16-bit and thus isn't considered "Hi-Res Audio", but it at least the ESS DAC is better than what's used by most computers and phones for their headphone out.Notes:1) The DS221 needs the USB to 5V power connection in both Bluetooth and USB DAC mode. Power consumption is very modest (<1 watt) and basically any USB power source should work.2) It features the Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth SoC and ESS Sabre 32 ES9018K2M DAC3) The spectrum bars in the lower right corner of the built-in display are just for decoration. It's just a repeated pattern.

This unit was a huge disappointment. The plan was to transmit the music to my home stereo receiver. The unit does not come with the plug-in adaptor, and there is no USB port on or around my receiver, so no way to power this up without buying an adaptor for it. At this price point, it should have been a no-brainer for the manufacturer to include that with the device.I just ordered an adaptor, so after it comes in, I’ll come back and update this. Maybe I’ll be in a better mood by then.
